Toward economic and social progress through dialogue and cooperation

The International Union of Economists (IUE) was founded in 1991 to promote the global economic and social progress. Currently, professionals from 48 countries of the world – leading economists, experts, scientists and practitioners, government officials and public figures, representatives of the business community, national and regional unions and associations of economists – contribute to the IUE’s effort.

In 1999, the International Union of Economists was granted the General Consultative Status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC), which was reaffirmed and extended in March 2021.

Currently, only 142 international non-governmental organizations in the world possess this high status. The International Union of Economists is also associated with the United Nations Department of Global Communications.

The IUE is authorized to use the floor of the UN Economic and Social Council to speak at the UN General Assembly.

The International Union of Economists is headquartered in the Russian Federation at Tverskaya 22-A, Moscow.

The IUE’s main goals and objectives include:

Over the years of the IUE’s work, effective expert involvement formats have been developed that have allowed the IUE to become an open international intellectual platform.

Speaking about the contribution of the International Union of Economists to the achievement of the sustainable development goals, UN Secretary-General António Guterres noted that the Union is "active in analyzing the existing challenges and problems of ensuring sustainable development, important expert work to promote dialogue and search for constructive solutions in the name of achieving the common goal of creating a common sustainable future."

The General Consultative Status with the ECOSOC allows the IUE to broadcast from the rostrum of the UN and other authoritative international organizations recommendations on solving urgent problems facing the world, to take part in disseminating the findings of the UN analytical activities.

In accordance with its planned activities regulated by the UN ECOSOC General Consultative Status, the International Union of Economists regularly submits expert opinions and reports to the UN Department of Global Communications (DGC) and the UN ECOSOC.

The IUE was selected to host the launches of the annual World Economic Situation and Prospects Report (by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) in collaboration with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the five UN Regional Commissions) and the annual UNCTAD Trade and development Report. The presentations of these reports, which are among the most authoritative publications by the UN, are held annually on a single day in all global capitals.

One of the key events of the International Union of Economists is its General Meeting (IUE General Meeting), where issues of the economic development of Russia and the world are discussed. Among the main topics of the discussions at the IUE General Meeting are the potential opportunities for growth and structural and technological restructuring of the Russian economy, key trends in the global environment, economy, demography, and technology; trends, priorities, and tools of monetary, financial, economic and social policy and their impact on the prospects for sustainable development in Russia and the world.

The IUE General Meeting has been held since 1992 in different countries of the world – in Russia, US, Spain, France, Israel, Australia, Croatia, Jordan, Mexico, China, Brazil, Norway, New Zealand, South Africa, Indonesia, Cuba, Cyprus, and other countries.
